Tamalis, Ice Cream, Coconuts, and Oranges. . .

This has been quite a random day.

It has been a bit of a slow day for maintenance.  We put together a bed for someone, fixed a few lights and Mami Myrna gave us Tamalis.  I have never had one before.  It is Corn (flour) green peppers, beans and cheese wrapped in a banana leaf and fried.  Muy Bien.

Then a bit later we ran into Leiva's wife who teaches the Kindergarten kids and she gave us an ice cream cone.  After that we went to fix the fan in the office and were given oranges.  After lunch we took the backhoe-loader-mammoth-tractor and the Mechanic to replace a light on the ball field.   Mechanico (as Leiva affectionately calls him) drove and Leiva did the trapeze act.  They raised the bucket up as high as they could and then placed a long aluminum latter inside of the bucket and leaned it against the lamp post.  It was just long enough.

After the lamp was fixed they moved the tractor a bit and got a machete from a nearby house in order to get some coconuts from the tree.  I wish I could have gotten a picture of Leiva standing in the bucket of this huge loader in his hardhat with a machete cutting coconuts from the tree.  After two attempts to get some above his head, and getting hit in the head twice (despite the hard hat) they moved to a lower tree.   If you have never held a coconut fresh from a tree, they are very hard and heavy.   It could definitely do some serious damages falling from the top of a tree.  After lowering the bucket we feasted on our booty.  Of course we shared it with those who passed by.  A fresh coconut is actually full of "sweetish" water. after you drink this you can cut it open and scrape out the "flesh" (the stuff that we usually consider to be coconut).

There wasn't much that needed to get accomplished today it seemed.   We stopped by a mango tree on the way back to the garage and harvested some green mangos from the tractor bucket.   After hosing the tractor down we had an impromptu a competition to see who could throw Leiva's machete and get it to stick into a tree.   After a few more errand Leiva pulled out an envelope and sprayed some cologne on it.  All the couples had been given a card for their spouses for valentines day.  We are supposed to write in them and turn them in for a banquet or something, I'm really not sure.  Since they were both working on their letter I went and got mine.    There we sat, the greasy Mecanico, Leiva with his yellow hardhat, and me, writing love letters to our wives in the shop.  Definitly a random day.  Lot's of free food, fun, and we even got some work done!

Dude, pretty sweet day you had there.  Wanna trade? :)

On the coconuts: Pictures would've been nice, but better yet would have been the audio.  I mean, what does it sound like when a coconut hits a yellow hard-hat on the head of man on a ladder standing in the raised bucket of a loader?  Honestly, I don't think I've ever had opportunity to hear this.
