Overdue El Salvador Update

This post is a bit belated.  Lots of things have been happening in our lives over the last few months.  We realize that there are some people that we don’t get to talk to frequently who may not have heard.  So it’s about time for an update on NLD.

First of all, we are back in the US.  We were in El Salvador for almost exactly one year.  We came back because of several factors.  The primary one is my health.  I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in July.  We returned to El Salvador hoping that some simple dietary changes could improve my condition.  It ended up being difficult to implement a good regimen with our limited access to variety in the food department.  My symptoms did not go away and I continued to feel like I was losing weight.

We also found out that we were going to have a baby! (Due in August.)  We had originally hoped to either have it in El Salvador or to come home for several months and possibly return afterward.  However, we decided that we needed more time and resources to figure out what to do about my health and that we needed to do it soon, before the baby came.  It was a tough decision, but we finally determined that it would be best to return to the states as soon as possible.

We are currently staying with my folks and some friends that have been extremely generous and have let us stay with them for a while.  I’m working on a more strict diet regimen and looking for a job for next school year.  Our lives are a bit crazy, in a slow and not too exciting way right now.  We are learning again to wait and trust in God.  We don’t know where we will be living or working – but He knows.  He’ll fill us in when he thinks it best.   We would really appreciate your prayers at this time.  Especially for the baby and our health.  A big thanks to everyone who has been so supportive of us over the past year.

If you want to see some pictures of our farewell, Crissy’s brother has posted some here.

I loved the pictures!  Maybe you could do some stories/accounts of some of your experiences.  Did either of you keep a journal?  I am sure we would all love to hear more about what you experienced and I am curious about the family groupings in the compound.  Do you think that that would work in the United States...could orphanages (are there many orphanages in the US?) be designed and work like that?  I am showing my ignorance here because I do not know anything about what is being done or what works well in our own country!  Maybe you could do a series of articles on NLD and cover some of the main issues or your most memorable experiences.  It would be interesting to see viewpoints from a personal level and viewpoints from a political level.  The whole family is excited for you both!  Becoming parents!  There is nothing like it!  What a wonderful time for you!  I am looking forward to seeing you sometime soon!
