Another book to Read

I was talking via email to Erin about a book I am reading, A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold.  She told me about a book she wants to re-read titled Economics in One Lesson.  She googled the author (Henry Hazlitt) and got a hit on the Lew Rockwell site.  I think this might be the next book I either get from the library or buy.  I am glad our son, Jon, is taking a course (Money and Banking).  I told him he will have to explain some things to me when he comes home!  He said the prof has indicated he will be tying what they are learning to what is happening in the financial world today.  So hope it turns out to be a good course and maybe Jon can enlighten me (us) on some things.  The more I read, tho, the more concerned I get about our financial institutions and the framework we all deal with.

I am reading Hazlitt's book now and highly recommend it. Another book that I have started is Llewellyn Rockwell's The Left The Right And the State. Only a couple of chapters into it so I will reserve my opinion for later..but very good so far if you like books that make you think. I just finished Amazing Grace, A Vocabulary of Faith by Kathleen Norris. This is the type of book I would not normally read but I really got a lot out of it. There were many things that I did not agree with but it was well worth reading especally if you have reservations about traditional christianity. By reflecting on her own conversion I was able to come away with a different perspective of why people chose to worship as the do.

While I am waiting for the book, Economics In One Lesson, I have started what looks like an interesting book, What Would Jefferson Do?  We gave this book to our son about a year ago and I noticed it in his bookcase today and picked it up.  I hope it is good.  So far it looks promising.  A part of the quote on the back of the book is as follows:  ".....He traces the history of democracy in the United States, identifies the most prevalent myths about it, and offers an inspiring yet realistic plan for transforming the political landscape and reviving Jefferson's dream before it is too late."  As I have been reading though I keep having thoughts about the press.  Why aren't they more diligient?  Why aren't they reporting what is going on.  Why don't they ask the hard questions and follow through with good old journalist's research?  The Fourth Estate, I think, has let us down.
