I've always heard that there's no time like the present. Well here's an opportunity to make that saying ring true. May 19-21 is Strasburg, VA's annual Mayfest. On Main Street you will find crafts and booths and parades and loud music all weekend long. "What a great opportunity to witness" you say. Well, in fact, for the second year in a row, the Strasburg SDA church will have a table set up with various literature to give out free of charge. That is basically for information. This is the part you need to be paying attention to. Wouldn't it be great if, at that table, there was a big poster that said "No Less Days and Friends" will be having a concert/hymn sing on Saturday afternoon between the hours of 2:00-6:00pm in the parking lot of the Strasburg SDA church at the corner of North Main Street and 55W?"
Do you think this is something we might be able to pull off? Rick Curnutte will be down that Sabbath for special music. Maybe he could bring his trio. I could also ask Eric and Shawn Garman if they would like to do something. They also have an extra amplifier? We could print up booklets of best loved hymns that people could sing out of. Basically, I am just putting down all the ideas that were coming out of my head on the way to work. I also thought about having a health expo thingy set up on Sunday, but I don't know if I can get everything together by then.
Okay, this is my first contribution to the site, so the more receptive people are to my idea, the more likely I will be to continue adding content (no pressure
) Just for the record, that's actually a joke.
I really like this idea! It sounds like a great opportunity and I think it would be a lot of fun. Is the Strasburg Church fairly central to the activities? Would people be able to just walk there? Is it visisble from the street? Is there any shade? Just a few logistics I was thinking about.
I really like the idea of having a hymn booklet. And the idea about people can bring thier instruments and join in as well. Should we do some of our own songs and some group songs?
I definately think we should do it. But we'll need to start the planning right away, since we have less than 2 weeks. Who all is going to be at PB & this week? That would be a good time to finalize some stuff.
I vote Shannon to organize and delegate
And I hope everyone responds to this!
The Strasburg Church is about a 5 minute walk from where the main events are taking place. If you are walking by, you would see it. There isn't much in the way of shade, but Kenny Garman might have a tent we could use that he uses to sell fireworks in the summer.
It would be nice if we could have some cds or something available to give out there. I don't know if any of the recording projects are finished or not.
The other question is how much music can we put together, and how many other people could we get together to add their talent as well?
Here are some hymns that I feel comfortable playing. If you have anymore suggestions let me know. Christopher, are you putting the songsheet together?
This is my Father’s world
This world is not my home
Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus
What a friend we have in Jesus
I’ll fly away
In the sweet by and by
Amazing grace
There is a fountain
Jesus paid it all
Pass me not
Leaning on the everlasting arms
Power in the blood
Lemonade - At the church and ready to be made (cups also)
Tents - Will be picking up a 10 by 20 tent and a 10 by 10 tent at 2:30pm. Please confirm who will be able to help set them up at the church at 4:00pm on Friday afternoon
Sound System - Still exploring possibilities. Contacted the general conference for Paul Anton's old system and have not heard back. The person Lulabell (AKA Laura) mentioned also supposedly has a sound system with a mixing board. Laura's dad will be contacting him and getting back to me regarding this. Aside from these, the only other option I have right now is Shawn Garmans 2 input amplifier. Any other ideas? I will be bringing some heavy duty electric cord as well.
Haystacks - For those who are thinking about coming down to Strasburg for church as well, please let us know what you would like to bring for haystacks. Rick Curnutte is bringing lettuce.
I think that's about all I can think of.
Just for clarification, what is the progress on the flyers, poster and hymn songbooks?
Poster is almost done. I have the hymns all typed up. How shall we get them printed? I still need to do a little formatting, but they're pretty much ready to go.
We'll bring the beans, and something else if needed.
I talked to mom today and she said that the sheet fed printing is backed up. The guy that does the work comes in on Tuesdays and Thursdays and it may not be very likely that they will get done by Sabbath. In the future, if mass printing is needed, they usually say it will take 10 days to 2 weeks.
I know their are color copy places around though, so if you want to send them to me, I will go to one of those places and get them done. How many hymn booklets? 50? 100?
Are we going to have flyers passed out as well?
Can you send the formatted files in word, PDF and or JPEG. I am not sure which one will work best for printing
