Welfare before the Revolution

With the flight of the Huguenots a general decline settled upon France. ... Paris became one vast almshouse, and it is estimated that, at the breaking out of the Revolution, two hundred thousand paupers claimed charity from the hands of the king.  The Jesuits alone flourished in the decaying nation, and ruled with dreadful tyranny over churches and schools, the prisons and the galleys.

Willing to be Unacknowledged

At Christmas time each year, the battle once again heats up over references to Christmas. Businesses and government, as institutions that in some way reflect public sentiment, make decisions regarding how they will relate to the yuletide festivity.

Sick and barely passing

My Adult 3 class is one of the hardest at this university. I am currently passing, but I didn't do as well on the last test as I would have liked to. My final is this Monday, and the reason I didn't do so well on the last test was because I was sick. I am currently still fighting the illness, so I stayed home from orchestra tour this weekend on strong recommendation.

Lessons from Thanksgiving

We no longer live in an agrarian society, and in some ways this has disconected us from the laws that govern nature and life. In nature, things take time to grow, change, and develop. A tree can take decades to reach its full height, it takes a person several decades of life before they can become a biological grandparent.

lost focus

It was pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. A couple weeks ago, I found myself in a whiny, mangled lump of self-pity. I was grumpy and cantankerous. I seemed cheerful enough. I still laughed and smiled, and lit up everyone's lives (wink), but I felt like an emotional blob of mashed potatoes.
